The Maremma Natural Park is one of the most interesting and diverse inItaly and well worth a trip. The Park begins at the mouth of theOmbrone river area, rich with vegetation and marshes, like "laTrappola", a series of shallow ponds separated by sand dunes and thickcanes, home of many bird species, some of which are very rare like thebeautiful "Cavalieri d’Italia" with their white body, the black wingsand long fire-red legs. At the border of the marshes people still breedthe typical horse of the region, the Maremman horse, and cows with longwhite horns. Aboard an old ferry you can cross the Trappola to theplains on the opposite side. The countryside presents many canals redwith "semprevivo" weeds in every season. Between the water plants youcan easily see many fish species and even water turtles. The areabetween the mountains and the see is like a triangle with the famousAlberese pine wood with more than 80.000 trees. Behind the pine woodsyou can see the "Uccellina" mountains, that once was an island withwhite limestone shores, filled with natural caves and towers built toprotect the population from the Saracen pirate raids. The beaches aremaybe the last surviving natural and untouched sea coasts in ourCountry, thanks to the rigid regulations that govern the access to thenatural park: the shoreline goes from Principina a Mare to Cala diForno and on the white and very fine sand you can see rare plants withcolourful flowers like "eryngium", "cardo delle sabbie", "zigolo", andlilium. Tourists can visit the park only on a Wednesday, Saturday andSunday and can buy the tickets for the tour at the tourist centre inAlberese village.
